Advantages of Traveling with Toddlers
Traveling with toddlers may seem daunting, but the benefits outweigh the challenges. Here are some advantages of traveling with toddlers and why families should consider it:
Bonding Opportunities: It creates a foundation for future family adventures and traditions but also fills your heart with joy as you witness your child’s first experiences in new places.
Educational and Developmental Benefits: Traveling exposes toddlers to new cultures, environments, and experiences, fostering curiosity and learning. It helps children develop social skills, adaptability, and resilience.
Family Time: Traveling with toddlers provides quality family time away from daily routines and distractions. It allows families to focus on each other and create shared experiences that strengthen relationships.
Building Confidence: Traveling with toddlers encourages independence and self-confidence as children navigate new surroundings and situations. It helps them develop problem-solving skills and adapt to different environments.
Creating Lasting Memories: While toddlers may not remember every trip detail, the memories captured through photos, videos, and stories will be cherished for years to come.
Helpful Traveling with Toddlers Tips

1. Invest in Convenience and Comfort
If you can afford to, spend the extra money for convenience and comfort. It will be well worth it. Choose direct flights instead of connecting flights and book preferred seats, ideally a window seat for the extra leaning space your child will surely use and enjoy.
2. Plan Ahead
Planning comes in many shapes and sizes.
Think through where you’re going and ensure the activities you have planned are baby-friendly.
Consider setting aside time and activities just for them. For instance in Paris, since Baby K enjoys long strolls, we went on daily walks in parks, which he really enjoyed. Other activities can include visits to children’s museums, beach outings, national parks, zoos, theme parks, or interactive tours that cater to young children.
3. Bring Grandparents
I love traveling with my mom. Now that she’s a grandma, I try to bring her along for as many adventures as possible. Having an extra set of hands (and eyes on your baby) can be incredibly helpful. Grandparents can provide support and gift you the opportunity to relax during your travels. Plus, imagine all the memories you will make together as a family.
4. Speak Up
I haven’t quite mastered this one yet, but I’m getting better every day.
Advocate for your child’s needs. Be bold and ask for accommodations when necessary.
If you need to sit down on the bus, ask for that seat. Ask airline staff if you can sit with an open seat beside you. You are your baby’s best advocate and voice in the world. If you do not ask, you do not get.
5. Ignore the Stares
When your child misbehaves, people may stare or make you uncomfortable, but remember that your child deserves to be included in family activities. The only way they will learn how to be respectful is through experience.
So when your baby is screaming on the flight and refuses to sit down, don’t pay attention to the people gawking at you. Focus on the task at hand, attending to your baby.

6. Pack a Travel Bag
Give your toddler their own travel bag with essentials like diapers, wipes, snacks, and toys. This will help keep their many belongings organized and easily accessible.
Need help staying organized? Consider creating a traveling with toddlers checklist, so you never miss essentials.
7. Bring Familiar and New Toys
Something old and something new. When traveling, introduce new toys to engage your child and bring familiar items for comfort. Maintaining routines and bringing familiar items can help your toddler feel secure and safe.
8. Use a Travel-Friendly Stroller
Don’t leave home without your toddler’s stroller. A stroller can provide comfort, shelter, and storage for essential items. Choose a lightweight, easy-to-maneuver stroller, like the Graco Ready2Jet Compact Stroller for convenience during your travels. These strollers are designed to be compact, easy to fold, and durable, making them ideal for travel.
9. Avoid Extreme Hunger and Tiredness
Try to stick to your child’s routine as much as possible to prevent meltdowns due to hunger or fatigue. Be prepared with snacks and plan for impromptu naps. Being well-prepared can help alleviate stress and ensure a smoother travel experience for you and your toddler.
