I remember the moment vividly when I realized that setting travel goals was the key to unlocking my travel dreams. It all started with a single aspiration that had been nestled in my heart since I was a little girl: to visit Paris and stand at the top of the Eiffel Tower.
That dream felt so far away for years, but that one travel goal set me on the path to becoming the financially savvy traveler I am today.
In 2014, after months of hard work, I finally booked my first solo trip to Paris.

The feeling of accomplishment when I stood at the top of the Eiffel Tower was indescribable.
It was a moment filled with joy, and I realized that achieving that goal had changed my life. That was when I understood the power of setting travel goals.
Having a clear travel goal gave me purpose and motivation. It was more than just visiting a destination; it was a target to aim for, a reason to work hard, and a way to prioritize travel.
I learned that things don’t just happen; we make them happen.
Setting travel goals provided me with direction and something to look forward to, which ultimately made my dream travel experiences a reality.
From then on, I made it a practice to set them regularly. I began to dream big, jotting down my aspirations, researching costs, and creating timelines.
I even started identifying potential roadblocks and brainstorming solutions. This structured approach transformed my travel planning process and made it feel achievable. I hope sharing my framework with you will help you do the same.
Whether it’s a simple weekend getaway or an ambitious trip around the world, setting those intentions is the secret to bringing our travel dreams to life. Here’s a comprehensive guide on how to set and achieve your travel goals.
What is a travel goal?
A travel goal is specific destinations, activities, and memorable experiences you want to prioritize and achieve.
These goals can range from simple aspirations, like camping for the first time, to more ambitious plans, such as a year-long trip around the world or going on a travel challenge, like 12 trips in 12 months.
Essentially, travel goals provide a purpose for working hard and serve as targets to aim for.
Why is travel goal setting important?
Travel goal setting is important for several reasons:
- Motivation: Having clear goals keep us motivated and focused on our aspirations. It gives us something to look forward to and work towards.
- Direction and Prioritization: Setting travel aspirations helps prioritize what’s important and effectively plan for the future.
- Creating a Financial Plan: Travel goals often require financial planning. Setting these goals allows you to create a realistic budget and a savings plan to achieve your desired result.
- Identifying Roadblocks: Goal setting encourages you to think ahead about potential obstacles that may hinder your travel plans. This foresight allows for brainstorming solutions to overcome these challenges.
- Accountability: Sharing them with others can create a support system that helps keep you accountable, ensuring you stay on track and see it through.
- Sense of Accomplishment: Achieving your dreams can be a rewarding experience, providing a sense of accomplishment and fulfillment.
Step 1. Dream Big
Start by allowing yourself to dream. Where do you want to go?
What experiences are calling out to you? This is the time to let your imagination roam free. Don’t worry about finances or self-doubt just yet; focus on what you truly desire.
What do I want more of in my life is another excellent question to ask.
Step 2. Write It Down
Once you’ve brainstormed your unfiltered travel ideas, write them down.
Whether you prefer pen and paper or digital notes, putting your goals in writing makes them more tangible.
Next, place them somewhere visible, like a sticky note on your computer or a screensaver on your phone, to keep that inspiration front and center.
Step 3. Research Your Costs
Next, it’s time to get practical. Research the costs associated with your travel goals.
Start with the big two expenses: lodging and transportation to get to your destination.
Look up potential flight prices, accommodation rates, and any other travel-related expenses. Having a rough estimate will help you create a realistic travel budget.

Step 4. Set a Timeline
When do you want to achieve your travel goals?
Setting a deadline adds urgency and keeps your motivation high.
Whether it’s a short-term goal for the next few months or a long-term aspiration for a couple of years down the line, having a timeline will help you stay focused and cross the finish line.
For example, Japan is on our wish list for 2026, which gives us enough time to research and find flight deals.
Step 5. Identify Roadblocks
This step is often overlooked but crucial to success.
Think ahead about potential obstacles that could prevent you from achieving your goals. This could include time constraints, financial limitations, or even logistical issues like needing a passport.
By identifying these roadblocks early, you can brainstorm solutions to overcome them.
In this travel goals printable, create an action plan by jotting down potential obstacles and solutions.

Step 6. Create a Savings Plan
Travel and money go hand in hand. To achieve your travel bucket list, you need a financial game plan.
Based on your travel cost research in Step 3, determine how much you need to save and create a budget to set aside money to pay for upcoming expenses.
Consider opening a travel fund or using budgeting apps to help you stay on track.

Accountability can be a powerful motivator. Share your travel bucket list with a friend, family member, or coworker who can support and encourage you. This person can cheer you on, help keep you accountable, and remind you of your aspirations when life throws you curveballs.

Step 8. Track Your Progress
Monitoring your progress is crucial. Create a travel goals checklist or use a tracking app to keep tabs on your journey. Celebrate small wins along the way to maintain your enthusiasm and motivation.
Step 9. Stay Flexible
Life happens, and sometimes you may need to pivot or adjust your goals. Be open to change and give yourself the space to realign your plans as needed. Remember, it’s okay to change your mind or take a break if necessary.
Additional Tips for Success
Involve Your Travel Companions: If you typically travel with others, include them in the goal-setting process. This ensures everyone is on the same page and excited about future plans

Create a Vision Board: Visual reminders can help with manifestation and keep your travel dreams alive. Consider making a vision board that showcases your travel aspirations.
For many years, when working in corporate, I had a beautiful cutout of the Bermuda pink sand beaches hanging on the overhead of my desk cabinet. I loved looking at that image. When I walked into my office, I always saw that goal of wanting to go to Bermuda. It was a subtle yet powerful reminder that inspired me.
By the way, I’ve visited Bermuda twice, and I highly recommend visiting if you have a chance.
Break Down Your Goals: Focus on what you can do right now to achieve your goals. Breaking them down into smaller, actionable steps can help you maintain momentum and avoid overwhelm.
Stay Committed: No matter how long it takes or how hard you have to work, stay focused. The sense of accomplishment when you finally achieve them will be worth it.
Final Thoughts: Dream Big & Stay Committed
Setting and achieving travel goals is rewarding and can lead to unforgettable travel experiences. By dreaming big, planning intentionally, and staying committed, you can turn your travel aspirations into reality quicker than you think.
So, what are your travel goals?
Start mapping them out, and get ready for the adventures that await you!
