Why Winter is Low-Key the Best Time to Visit NYC
A weather alert flashes on my phone. It’s nearing 15 degrees (but it feels like 11) as I train into New York City for a two-day getaway. Temperatures are expected to go lower, and I am bundled from head to toe. Despite layering up, my toes are so cold they are going numb. 🥶
Planning a trip to NYC? You may be wondering when is the best time to visit NYC. Well, you might not expect me to say this, but as a New Yorker who moved away but visits regularly, I can confidently say that winter is secretly the best time to experience the city’s unique charm.

When you search for the “best time to visit New York City,” you’ll hear a lot of “anytime,” spring, summer, and fall. All those answers are correct.
If you’re looking to save some serious cash, the cheapest time to visit NYC is in winter, particularly January to February, is the most affordable time to visit.
Although each season brings its own advantages (and disadvantages), bargain-hunting, financially savvy travelers looking for the best deals, fewer crowds, and wildly fun adventures should book a winter NYC trip.
Why Visit New York in Winter
Winter months (January to February) are NYC’s off-peak travel season.
While winter technically includes December and March, we’re not going to include them here because December is one of the most expensive times to visit because of all the holiday festivities.

1. Fewer Crowds
Coming off the peak of the holiday season, crowds thin out as most people prefer to stay home and snuggle under their heated blankets.
For brave souls who don’t mind the frigid temperatures, the winter season promises fewer crowds, which means shorter lines at iconic landmarks and attractions.
And with those short wait times, you can fit more into your day!
Plus, more breathing room on subways is always appreciated, right?
While the city will never be empty, it will sure feel like you have more of it to yourself than in the summer months.
2. Cheaper Prices
Less demand in winter drives prices down for hotel stays and flights.
As airlines and hotels struggle to reach capacity, they are willing to slash prices and offer deep discounts. Yay!
In winter, you can easily score a cheap NYC vacation without much fuss or time spent travel hacking.

In January, I regularly find $150-per-night hotel stays in Midtown Manhattan, like YOTEL New York Times Square Hotel, though prices tend to creep up around Valentine’s Day.
The same hotel in September costs nearly $600 a night.
3. Annual Events in Winter
Another great reason to visit is all the post-holiday seasonal deals, bringing down your spending on food, activities, and shopping.
Incentivizing tourists to visit, the New York City Tourism Office intentionally partners with thousands of businesses across all five boroughs during the slower months to boost business.
Since 2011, the citywide annual program, “NYC Winter Outing,” has encouraged locals and tourists to go outside and explore with programming in January and February.
1. Broadway Week
Seeing a Broadway show is an iconic NYC experience, but let’s be real: It can be pricey.
During Broadway Week, theatergoers can take advantage of savings by purchasing 2-for-1 tickets for 27 shows.
Whether you want to see a classic like “The Lion King” or a newer arrival like “Sunset Boulevard,” visit the NYC Tourism website and use their promo code to snag discounts.
Helpful Tip: Before your trip, create a wish list of shows you want to see so you can spend less time searching for what you’re looking for when booking.
A limited number of discounted seats are available for each show.
While Broadway Week is in January, Off-Broadway Week is typically in February.
You can save on ticketing fees by purchasing your tickets in person at the box office or the TKTS booth in Times Square.
2. NYC Restaurant Week
NYC Restaurant Week offers pre-fixed two-course menus and three-course dinners at more than 500 restaurants citywide for $30, $40, and $60. Find participating restaurants across all five boroughs.

3. NYC Must-See Week
Enjoy 2-for-1 tickets to 60 museums, attractions, tours, and performing arts locales for NYC Must-See Week. This is a great time to save money on popular attractions like the Empire State Building Observatory, the Museum of Modern Art (MOMA), and more.

3. More Savings With Go City
The Go City: New York Pass is a fantastic option to save even more.
Instead of paying full price for individual tickets to multiple attractions, this pass bundles them at a discounted rate, allowing you to save up to 50% on iconic NYC attractions, like:
- Statue of Liberty & Ellis Island Ferry
- Hop-on Hop-off Bus Tour
- One World Observatory
- And more!
Whether spending a weekend or a whole week in NYC, the Go City Pass can help you see more for less all year round.
The Downside of Visiting in Winter
Let’s be real: NYC is less popular in the winter for several reasons.

As expected, winter weather is unpredictable (and brutal). Snow storms, icy conditions, and cold fronts can disrupt travel plans and cause delays.
Check the weather forecast and allocate more time to navigate the city.
It could rain, snow, hail, or all of the above. And the windchill makes it feel even colder, especially when near a waterfront or when you’re sandwiched in between tall buildings.
Dress in layers to stay warm; here’s what you should pack:
- thermal tops and bottoms
- wool or fleece sweaters
- scarfs
- waterproof and insulated gloves (touch screen access)
- earmuffs
- wool socks
- warm coat
- waterproof shoes
Remember to bring tissues (just in case of runny noses), chapstick, or lip balm, too!
There is less daylight in winter. If you plan to do light-dependent activities, schedule them earlier in the day.
Lastly, keep in mind sunset is around 4:30 PM Eastern Standard Time.
Still, winter is the best time to visit NYC!
I’ve visited New York City in winter more than I can count, and it’s undoubtedly the cheapest time to go to New York.
When you visit New York in January and February, pretty much everything is on sale. Enjoy lower prices, fewer tourists, and unforgettable adventures in the city that never sleeps.
To fully enjoy what New York City offers, consider visiting during winter, even if it’s cold.
You won’t have to spend much money, allowing you to save for additional trips or treat yourself to something special.
So what are you waiting for? Get planning!
